Community Dance Week

15 December 2009

Over 80 young people took part in Down Community Arts’ Community Dance programme, culminating in an exhilarating performance at Down Arts Centre on Saturday, 28 November.

The theme was ‘Dance through the Ages’ with a variety of dance styles being choreographed by Annika Graham and Jennifer Rooney.

A highlight of the evening was a unique solo performance of IkkyWakk by leading hip-hop artist, Banxy, which enthralled a packed audience at Down Arts Centre,

Banxy also gave 2 hip-hop dance workshops during his visit to Downpatrick: at St Malachy’s School in Castlewellan and an open workshop at Down Arts Centre.

There was something for all ages and abilities during dance week: Bollywood/Bangra dance in Newcastle, tea dances in Killyleagh and Downpatrick, set dancing in Strangford and Egyptian dance in Downpatrick.

Said Vicki Maguire, General Manager of DCA:

“We were delighted to see so many people taking part in our community dance programme – dance is a fun activity for everyone, regardless of age or ability – and it’s a great way to keep fit and make new friends!”

The programme was funded by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland Lottery fund.
